Robert D. Patterson, MD, MBAFourth year resident with the University of Louisville Psychiatry Residency Program, co-author of “So You Want to be a Doctor?: A Guide for Students from High School through Retirement” (foreword written by esteemed neurosurgeon Dr. Benjamin Carson), freelance author nominated for 2009 National Association of Black Journalists Award for Best Newspaper Commentary and Best Commentary/Weblog, 2004-05 Journal of the National Medical Association Award for Medical Journalism recipient, 2003-04 American Medical Association Excellence in Medicine Award recipient, 2003-04 Student National Medical Association National Member of the Year, and accomplished public speaker on topics of concern to the African-American community, most notably: cultural competency in healthcare, minority healthcare disparities, and the 2008 presidential campaign. Chronicled the 2008 Democratic primary and general election presidential campaign from the biased viewpoint of a progressive African American male. Attended and penned first-hand accounts of the Democratic National Convention in Denver, CO and the historic 2009 Presidential Inauguration in Washington, D.C.  Articles have also appeared in the Indianapolis Recorder, Indianapolis Business Journal, Louisville Courier Journal, Black America Web, Black News Tribune, Metro Philadelphia, Jackson (Mississippi) Advocate, and web log at: www.robertpattersonmd.com   

         

BARACK OBAMA CAMPAIGN FOR CHANGE, Indianapolis, Indiana                          2008

Volunteer Captain

Responsible for team members charged with coordinating and tallying voting participation results for 7th district of Indiana during the week preceeding Election Day. Volunteered home as base for key members of then presidential candidate Barack Obama’s Indiana primary campaign team. Traveled to Columbus, OH to volunteer at prelude of Super Tuesday. Raised over $2,500 in campaign contributions.

Appointed as a delegate to the Indiana State Democratic Convention from Marion County. Responsibilities included debating, developing consensus, and ratifying party platform items of importance to the citizens of the 7th district of Indiana. 

 

INDIANA PRIMARY HEALTHCARE ASSOCIATION, Indianapolis, In      2002-2003 Consultant, Minority Health Affairs

Developed programs and strategies to promote greater healthcare quality and access for underrepresented minorities in Indiana.  Lobbied members of Indiana legislature on healthcare issues of concern for the minority community. Author of twenty-page report, Healthcare Disparities Among Minority Patients in Indiana: A Workforce Development Issue for IUSM, which was awarded the JNMA Award for Excellence in Journalism.

 

HEALTHCARE EXPERIENCE

Medical Gloves Product Manager

Developed total marketing strategy of products to hospital administrators, physicians, surgeons, and nursing representatives, which generated $35 million in sales and $20 million in GP.  Coordinated efforts of multi-functional team consisting of manufacturing, finance, marketing research, advertising, and sales management.

Influenced the prescribing habits of physicians through targeted sales calls to medical offices, clinics, and hospitals.  Maintained complete autonomy over a territory worth in excess of $3.5 million.

 

 

STUDENT LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE

STUDENT NATIONAL MEDICAL ASSOCIATION, IUSM, Indianapolis, Indiana

President                                                                                                             2003-2005

Responsible for the leadership of an organization of more than 80 minority graduate and medical students on the IUSM campus at Indianapolis.

Accomplishments:

1         Organized 2004 Region V Conference featuring speakers: Dr. Joycelyn Elders – former U.S. Surgeon General, and the late U.S.  Representative Julia Carson (D), Indiana 

2         Organized the AMA Doctor Back to School Program at IUSM, which encouraged physicians and medical students to speak weekly at local junior and senior high schools

3         Created organization’s first ever student resource handbook to help minority medical students adjust to the intense medical school environment

4         Increased dues-paying membership from 26 to 72 members

5         Raised over $98,000 during tenure to support programs related to minority healthcare

6         Awarded the 2003-04 Region V Chapter of the Year Award

 

DIVERSITY COUNCIL, IUSM, Indianapolis, Indiana

Dean Appointed Student Representative                                                          2002-2006              

Organized various IUSM departments, student groups, corporations, and community leaders to create a week-long forum dedicated to issues of diversity in medicine.  The week is comprised of a series of seminars and discussions exploring how embracing and understanding our diverse nature can contribute to better health outcomes for all. Solicited university and private funding sources to secure nationally acclaimed speakers for the 2003-2005 Diversity Week celebrations.  The keynote speaker for the 2nd Annual Diversity Week celebration was Benjamin Carson, MD, Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University.  The week’s other acclaimed speakers were William Lawson, MD, PhD, psychiatry chair at Howard University; Clive Callender, MD, surgery chair, Howard University; Elena Rios, MD, president National Hispanic Medical Association; and the late U.S. Representative Julia Carson (D), Indiana. The events drew a five-day attendance estimated at over 2,000 students, faculty, and members of the Indianapolis community. It also attracted significant media coverage leading to exposure of the minority healthcare disparity issues across campus, the Indianapolis community, and statewide. The event continues to this day as January 2009 witnessed the seventh such celebration on the IUSM campus.

 

 

 

ADDITIONAL COMMUNITY SERVICE EXPERIENCE

KEITH WOODARD MD SCHOLARSHIP FUND, Indianapolis, In.            2008 to present

Founder/Co-Chair

The fund will provide $5,000 in scholarships annually to two under-represented minority students for fees related to medical mission work overseas, or in a designated disaster area.

Developed lesson plans and taught basic chemistry and physics concepts to sophomore, junior, and senior high school students.

 

 

NORTHWEST INDIANA FOOTBALL CAMP, Gary, Indiana                      1991-1993

Co-Founder/Director

Developed, funded, and facilitated an annual football skills camp for underprivileged young men aged 8-17 in Gary, In. Primary goal of the camp was to help young men translate lessons learned on the playing field to success personally, professionally, and academically.

 

 

KAPPA ALPHA PSI CHAPTER, Greencastle, Indiana                                     1989

Founder

Implemented the groundwork for the first historically minority fraternity in the history of DePauw University.  The chapter (named Xi Rho) was officially recognized in 1992 and has helped over 100 young men adapt socially to the collegiate environment.
