Responsible for the leadership of an organization of more than 80 minority graduate and medical students on the IUSM campus at Indianapolis.
Accomplishments:
1 Organized 2004 Region V Conference featuring speakers: Dr. Joycelyn Elders – former U.S. Surgeon General, and the late U.S. Representative Julia Carson (D), Indiana
2 Organized the AMA Doctor Back to School Program at IUSM, which encouraged physicians and medical students to speak weekly at local junior and senior high schools
3 Created organization’s first ever student resource handbook to help minority medical students adjust to the intense medical school environment
4 Increased dues-paying membership from 26 to 72 members
5 Raised over $98,000 during tenure to support programs related to minority healthcare
6 Awarded the 2003-04 Region V Chapter of the Year Award
DIVERSITY COUNCIL, IUSM, Indianapolis, Indiana
Dean Appointed Student Representative 2002-2006
Organized various IUSM departments, student groups, corporations, and community leaders to create a week-long forum dedicated to issues of diversity in medicine. The week is comprised of a series of seminars and discussions exploring how embracing and understanding our diverse nature can contribute to better health outcomes for all. Solicited university and private funding sources to secure nationally acclaimed speakers for the 2003-2005 Diversity Week celebrations. The keynote speaker for the 2nd Annual Diversity Week celebration was Benjamin Carson, MD, Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University. The week’s other acclaimed speakers were William Lawson, MD, PhD, psychiatry chair at Howard University; Clive Callender, MD, surgery chair, Howard University; Elena Rios, MD, president National Hispanic Medical Association; and the late U.S. Representative Julia Carson (D), Indiana. The events drew a five-day attendance estimated at over 2,000 students, faculty, and members of the Indianapolis community. It also attracted significant media coverage leading to exposure of the minority healthcare disparity issues across campus, the Indianapolis community, and statewide. The event continues to this day as January 2009 witnessed the seventh such celebration on the IUSM campus.

Implemented the groundwork for the first historically minority fraternity in the history of DePauw University. The chapter (named Xi Rho) was officially recognized in 1992 and has helped over 100 young men adapt socially to the collegiate environment.
